What motivates me.

With a new clinic starting for the Vancouver Half marathon - over 90 so far registered and my personal training ramping up I started thinking about how I can stay motivated - basically not get overwhelmed and freak myself out. Let's face it I have set some pretty lofty goals for this year.

I think the thing that motivates me the most is the people I am surrounded by - my peeps - both friends and family. I think about my BFF who is now pregnant with twins - not a big thing until you realize that she is a single lady in her 40's who has decided to do this on her own. I only have to train for 8 months - she has the rest of her life and they don't come with manuals - at least not that I am aware of.

I think of Care bear and Tif - they have both struggled with injuries for the past year and yet they don't quit. Care Bear actually just got back from doing Goofy in Florida - 1/2 marathon one day, full marathon the next day. And Tif well she is just amazing - she has not been able to run for a year but instead of wallowing she started swimming with June bug and I am giving her my old bike so she can start riding. That is motivating - cripes I was out for 4 weeks - not a bloody year and I am only racing over one day not back to back days.

I look at my niece a single teenage mom and the other one a soon-to-be teenage mom and it motivates me to keep pushing. Yes they made a mistake but they have both accepted their mistakes and are moving forward to raise children on their own. That is an enormous responsibility - I am just responsible to myself and coach.

I also think of the ladies I ride with - they are so motivating and supportive - whenever I start to doubt they tell me not too worry you will be fine and somehow I believe them because they have not been wrong yet.

I think of my hubby and I know I can do it - he works 2 jobs and makes sure that I have everything and anything I need to succeed. He never complains and even sets his scheule up for me so that I don't miss workouts. There is no way I can't give 100%.

There are so many more, I am not going to mention everyone because it would be a small novel without a doubt. I guess mostly I am just inspired and motivated by everyone who believes that I can do this. I know it is going to be tough and I know it is going to hurt but really it is only going to be for 8 months + 13 hours and 50 minutes on race day. So I guess that leaves nothing else to say but How Bad Can it be?

Bye bye Turkey Tummy

Whew - finally the last vestiges of Turkey Tummy are finally gone.

Being sick and not being able to train over the holidays accompanied by the realization that the next 8 months I was going to have to clean up my diet I kind of went a little crazy. Anyone that knows me knows I absolutely love potato chips - adore them - I like every flavor - of course there are ones that I prefer more than others but I am an equal opportunity chip eater. As I always say I never met a chip that I did not get along with. Couple that with turkey sandwiches with homemade sausage dressing and well you have a perfect recipe for 8 lbs of turkey tummy.

Since the 2nd - I was too hungover on the first - I have cut out chips and alcohol - my 2 weaknesses and got back to working out regularly and this morning I am back to pre-Christmas weight. NO- I am not telling you what it is - but is a good weight.

Last night I had physio anc because I am on transit, no car at home and a border collie that was crossing his legs when I got home there was just no time to get to the pool but not to worry it is all good. I got home, grabbed the dog for a quick power walk around the neighborhood, got home fed dog and cat, changed into riding gear and got on the trainer for an hour. YES!!!! The snow is almost gone so hoping I can start riding back and forth from work starting next week which will remove time on the dreaded trainer.

So that is the update - just had to gloat for a bit.

SNOW is a BAD 4-letter word

Not much to report except... the snow is finally GONE!!! WOOHOOO, YEAH.

What a treat to be able to go out side and go for a walk let alone a run with out fearing I would break my neck. Sundays run was such a treat. I would take a step and miracles of all miracles my foot would stay exactly where I put it OMG! That is right it did not slide to one side or the other it did not suddenly lurch forward or back and I was not in a big puddle of ice it was the best! It allowed me to properly assess how my recovery is doing - still not there but I finished the run and did not feel like bursting into tears from the pain so am very pleased.

There are still issues - knee and hip are very sore by the end of a run and ache for a few hours after but the aching seems to last only the day of not the couple of days and I am slowly weaning myself off the Tylenol 3 - it was that I would finish a run and pop one right away - Sunday I did not take one at all.

Did my last spin class for awhile as the class has changed location and I am just not able to get there for the time it is - pretty bummed about it. No really, in some sick sadistic way I have truly come to love the weekly smack-down if nothing that it drives coach nuts that no matter how much pain or how hard he pushes I refuse to stop smiling - I know petty but it gives me small pleasure. I will be back at it in March though and he has given me workouts to do on my trainer at home - which are good but I do miss him yelling at me.

Swimming - well what can I say my bloody ACL is acting up still - not as bad as before but still acting up. I am getting through the workouts and have been able to do 3 x a week but by Friday it is pretty sore and yep last night I gave in and took a T3 before I went to bed.

Finally we have a room at my new office that they use for yoga in the evenings so I have taken to bringing my elastaband and ball and going in there at lunch and do my core and physio exercises as well as stretching. Now just to figure out how to get weights in there. Ah well one day at a time and with only 229 days left to race day I will treasure my rest day and get back at it tomorrow.

Slip sliding away

Yesterday was the first run since the blizzard on the 20th. I think I prefer running through 2 foot snow drifts for 2 hours.

For those that live in a cave - it has been snowing in Vancouver - first snow fall was actually on the 13th of December - the run on the 14th was pretty and beautiful through a small bit of snow in the trails. Normally that would be it back to rain, but we go a few more snow falls during the week no biggy it was going to warm up by Sunday and all would be good. WRONG - woke up on the 21st to a foot or so of snow - no reason to panic - we will go in the trails again.

It was an awful run - one that tested us all and broke a lot of folks spirits. 2 hours of slipping and trudging through snow and then it started to snow more, but we got through it. Well that is the end of it - I mean it is Vancouver.

NOPE - the next week was a right off for me due to a cold but I now hear that for the dedicated few that traveled out the next Sunday most got to the end of the first street - which they had to walk the whole way because of ice - and said screw it. But being eternally optimstic and living in Vancouver no biggy that means it is not snowing and the ice will melt and be gone by the next Sunday. Well sort of....

Yesterday was a slushy, icey mess - we did not go in the trails because it was safer on the sidewalks running past businesses and condos where they are legally obligated to clear them and put salt down but still it was dicey. My hips and ass are so sore today - on the positive side it is a good core workout.

However I am over it - no really bring back the rain. I miss running in wet soggy dreary Vancouver. It does not look promising - they are calling for warmer temps and rain until Thursday and THEN COLDER TEMPS which means for bloody Snow. I know for everyone else in Canada you are laughing at us but it is not funny anymore. Most of us moved from places of snow and Ice so we did not have to put up with this crap - we are not amused.

2009 the year of Ironman

Wow it has been a while since I have posted anything - probably because I have not been able to get much training in over the past month. December was a bit crazy in that I changed jobs to another part of the city so trying to get in to a new routine. I apparently went to sleep in Vancouver and woke up in Winnipeg around the 16th of December and the bloody stuff is still on the ground making running treacherous at best and then I got nailed with a cold on the 23rd.

I am feeling a lot better now - basically have not done anything since the 23rd with the exception of one spin class, walking the dog and shoveling snow so it is time to get back in the saddle literally. It might explain the antsy grouchy feeling I have had for the past 9 days....But I look at this way at least the seasonal cold is over and I am good to go - snow is slowly going and I am very excited about this year's racing plans.

So goals - UBC Tri in March, Oliver 1/2 Ironman in June, and the big dance - IRONMAN in August and then as a final swan song to 2009 will finish off the year with a Marathon in Dublin, Ireland with my hubby and good friend June - aka June bug.

I got a fabulous calendar - Inside Triathlon, a cadence meter for the bike, and a DVD from Endurance Nation on how to mentally prepare for Ironman. Oh and of course a lonely planet book on Ireland so June and I can plan our trip.

Tonight I will do some core work, Saturday will be a workout on the trainer and Sunday 16km on hopefully non-icy streets.
